Data center operator AirTrunk and deep-technology company Emergence Quantum have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore cryogenic cooling for data centers. The collaboration will examine how low-temperature systems could be integrated with data center architecture and quantum computing deployments.
The companies plan to combine expertise in cryogenic computing, thermal engineering, quantum technologies and data center design. They also intend to develop techno-economic models to assess performance and commercial viability.
Cryogenic cooling is traditionally associated with quantum computing, but the partners said it may also improve the performance and energy efficiency of some conventional silicon processors. The approach presents additional engineering and cost challenges compared with mainstream air and liquid cooling.
AirTrunk said the partnership supports its aim of developing infrastructure that is ready for future quantum systems. The operator has campuses operating or under development across Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Japan.
