Google Cloud announced the availability of Agent Substrate on Google Kubernetes Engine, positioning the runtime as infrastructure for large-scale autonomous-agent workloads.

The open-source runtime is designed to execute agents in isolated sandboxes with a security-focused architecture. Google said it supports high-density deployment and rapid suspend-and-resume operations, addressing workloads that create and destroy many short-lived environments.

Agent Substrate can run on Kubernetes infrastructure generally, but Google is optimizing it for GKE. The company described the system as using a zero-trust kernel and network isolation to reduce risks when agents execute code, install packages or interact with external tools.

The announcement reflects cloud providers' efforts to turn agent execution into a managed infrastructure layer rather than an application-level responsibility. Google cited early work by Nous Research, which is building on the runtime for its Hermes agent.

The release is primarily an infrastructure and Kubernetes development, although its immediate target market is the rapidly expanding AI-agent sector.
