GitHub Copilot can now suggest allowed values when administrators create custom properties for repositories. The capability is available in public preview for GitHub Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans.
Custom properties let organizations attach structured metadata to repositories and use that information to target rulesets. GitHub said administrators have often faced difficulty designing useful property taxonomies and maintaining consistent values across repositories.
The new feature generates suggestions based on the property being defined. For example, a multi-select property related to compliance may receive compliance-oriented values, while an internet-facing property may receive yes-or-no suggestions. Administrators can accept a suggestion with a single action.
Enterprise and organization owners can control access through the Repository custom property suggestions Copilot policy. The feature is intended to reduce setup friction and improve metadata consistency, but organizations will still need to review suggestions against their internal compliance, ownership and security models before adopting them.
